I’m excited to put all of the training I’ve learned throughout my professional hockey career and post career athletic endeavours to help the next generation of hockey players CRUSH their goals with the tools I wish I had access to level up my game when I was their age.

WHY hockey camp at crushcamp?

CrushCamp offers two studio spaces with world class training equipment including the SKILLMILL which was designed for Olympians to train on prior to the Rio Olympics. These unique treadmills are designed to lessen the impact on the body and offer a variety of positions to challenge the body, push cardiovascular endurance, build power, and expand lactic thresholds for the all important hockey legs.

With the use of the SKILLMILL, barbells, free weights, and other equipment, Coach Chris will help your athlete build a well rounded foundation to put their best foot forward during tryouts and build the strength, power, endurance, discipline, and mindset they need to CRUSH their hockey season.

A well rounded training regime IS KEY

A comprehensive hockey-specific training program for players aged 15-18 requires a balanced approach that integrates speed, strength, mobility, power, and on-ice skills development while also prioritizing injury prevention.

Growth: May will focus on building professional habits and quality repetition/technique. Introduction of weight training with high repetition to build muscle stamina, speed, twitch muscle memory. SKILLMILL overspeed sprint training introduced. Plyometrics, sprints, box jumps and cardiovascular primer. Ice session focuses on skating technique, edgework and skill development. Roll and restore session with Yoga sequence instructional stretches designed for hockey players.

Repetition: June and July will be continuous repetition to build muscle memory as the program hits flow. Increase in weight related exercises to continue muscle stamina readiness and confidence. Circuit training introduced to increase overall pace and challenge.  SKILLMILL overspeed sprint training progresses with an increase in Cardiovascular push. Continued Plyometrics, sprints, box jumps and cardiovascular output. Ice session focuses on skating technique, edgework and skill development. Breathwork (calming the mind) and 45-minute Flow and Restore Yoga session instructed.

Intensity: August will introduce one ice time per week to increase the intensity of game like readiness and cardiovascular output. Increased focus on Power for weight exercises coupled with speed overtraining to maximize performance.

Teamwork: There will be a team wind up party, coaches wishing each of you the best and ongoing support offered throughout the season. We are here to support you every step of the way and honored to be a teammate of yours off the ice as you pursue your hockey excellence and goals for the upcoming season.

YOUR coach HAS YOUR BACK

Chris will help your athlete to set tangible, achievable Fitness, Nutrition, and Mindset goals to level up their hockey game and set a solid foundation of healthy habits that will serve them for life. Expect to build strength, speed, endurance, power, on and off ice skills, discipline, and a winning mindset so they can CRUSH their tryouts.

It will not be easy

Your athlete will be pushed beyond their comfort zone - physically and mentally. They will be required to show up and put in the work for the duration of the camp, be open with their Coach and training mates about their goals, triumphs and setbacks. Because that is where the magic happens. And if there is one thing we can guarantee…

IT WILL BE WORTH IT

Chris has been making a positive impact on my kids lives since they first went into his hockey school many years ago. His attention, focus and frankly, his give a sh*t for the kids has always been his priority. His ability to relate with them, and share his obvious passion has helped to motivate them to not only be better hockey players but in fact be a role model and inspire them to be better humans. My son followed up with Chris years later and now works now works with Chris as an instructor He looks up to Chris as a mentor, colleague and friend and we couldn’t be happier as parents for him to have a role model like Chris to look up to.

CHRIS bruton

5 Years as a Professional Hockey Player, Captain of the 2008 Western Hockey League and Memorial Cup Champions, Certified Personal Trainer (Canfit Pro), 200 HR Yoga Teacher Training (Passage Studios), CPR Level C & AED Certified (Canadian Red Cross), Masters of Business Administration (University of West Scotland), Co-Founder + Head Instructor of the Columbia Valley Hockey School, and Owner - GRIT Performance.

Hello!

My name is Christopher Bruton and my purpose and passion is to train, coach and bring vitality and health to your life.

GRIT Performance is a culmination of my life devoted to sport, fitness, nutrition, and health. I grew up training extensively and specifically in the sport of hockey.  I was able to make a living playing the game I loved and competed for five years professionally.  Throughout my development from an early age until I retired from the game, I learned a diversity of training methods and programs.  I was fortunate enough to have gone through the highest caliber training programs from National Hockey League teams such as the St. Louis Blues, New York Islanders and Detroit Red Wings.

The sport of hockey opened a plethora of opportunities that included obtaining a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from Acadia University. I also received a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of the West of Scotland in my final year of professional hockey playing for the Braehead Clan in Glasgow, Scotland.

I have gone through hours and hours of training, weightlifting and developmental tools and practices to reaching my ultimate potential as an athlete. This includes sports psychologists and personal developmental coaches to enhance mental fortitude and performance.  Having stepped away from the game, I have been able to take certain aspects from my hockey training experiences and integrate them into multi-dimensional programs that are inspired to support athletes and individuals on reaching their fitness goals. I have worked out in functional sport specific gyms directed towards climbing and mountaineering.  I have expanded my knowledge and curiosity by actively participating in mobility classes, nutritional seminars, yoga classes, body recovery workshops, breathwork classes and just about anything else related to fitness. I am a Certified Personal Trainer, Expert Group Fitness Instructor and a Registered Yoga Teacher (200 Hour).

I want to support you by pushing not only your body but connecting with your motivation, improving your mindfulness, and creating personal growth and expansion.

I hope to provide value, motivation, energy, experience, coaching, knowledge, and a friendship to supporting your health and sport specific goals.

Grit Performance and Christopher’s coaching was a huge motivator for me when I needed it. He was instrumental on working with me to source the right nutrition and diet to give me more energy and feel healthier overall. I was intimidated with Yoga, meditation and breathwork but Christopher’s coaching made it fun and showed me the incredible benefits of these practices.

hockey camp FAQS

What age ranges can participate?

Our hockey camp is open to players aged 15-18.

What is biometric scanning, and how does it work?

Biometric scanning is the most effective way to understand your body composition (percentage of muscle mass, fat mass, mineral, and water content). By completing two scans, you will be able to measure your success and muscle development far more accurately than with a scale or measuring tape. The scan is completed by standing on two metal pads barefoot and fully clothed while a small electrical current passes through your body. Your first scan appointment will be 30 minutes long and include a personal explanation with recommendations from a licensed and trained technician. Learn more about inBody scans here
