5 tips for wearing masks while exercising

So your regional health authority has mandated wearing masks while exercising. It may not be an ideal experience, but through trial and error we have discovered 5 tips to help make it more comfortable and let you crush your workout!

TIP 1 - TRY A BRACKET

Mask brackets can be purchased online and are inexpensive pieces of plastic that help to keep your mask off your face and out of your mouth, while giving you more space to breathe, while still maintaining a snug seal. We like these ones, and we’re also selling them in-studio if you don’t want to buy in bulk.

TIP 2 - EXPERIMENT WITH DIFFERENT MASKS

Silk may be cute when you’re heading out on a date, but cotton, polyester, or disposable will be less hot while exercising. Get sore ears? Try one that goes around the back of your head.

TIP 3 - BREATHE THROUGH YOUR NOSE

If you find your mask gets sucked into your mouth, try to breathe through your nose. Bonus - this will help you to regulate your intensity and calm your nervous system.

TIP 4 - BRING A BACKUP MASK

You’ll be sweaty after class - so bring a clean, dry mask to change into!

TIP 5 - BE KIND TO YOURSELF

This one ALWAYS applies, but now more than ever! You may not be able to go as hard or as fast with a mask on, and that’s okay. Movement is still movement. Use this time to work on building up your stamina and strength and improving your form, so that one day when the masks come off, you can really fly!
